DAN WEIGAND – METASTATIC LUNG CANCER (case story submitted by Ross Hauser, MD on January 3, 2001. Real names used by permission.) Dan Weigand is a long time patient of Caring Medical having been ‘cured’ of various pains in the past with Prolotherapy when on 1/31/00 he came with complaint of upper back pain and with the hope of receiving Prolotherapy. Dr. Hauser ordered X-rays of the upper spine and chest because Dan had no preceding trauma and stated the pain was keeping him up at night. The initial X-rays showed multiple nodular densities in the chest. Dan was notified and immediately a CT of the Thorax was done which showed the same nodular densities highly suspicious for metastatic disease. A subsequent CT of the abdomen showed multiple ill defined low density lesions in the left lobe of the liver again suspicious for metastasis. Further work-up failed to reveal the primary source of the cancer. Dan was very familiar with the natural medicine approach being a long time patient of Caring Medical. He did not desire to see a oncologist or receive traditional cancer therapy with high dose chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. The lesions he had in the lung and liver were not easily accessible with a biopsy so he did not want to go that route. Instead he choose to receive Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT). Dan’s IPT regime consisted of weekly injections of low dose adriamycin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and etoposide. After the fifth IPT, his wife (God bless her) came in to Caring Medical completely irate. She snapped at Dr. Hauser "how can you give treatment to my husband when you don’t know what you are treating." She said many more sundries that are not repeatable on this family Internet site. Dr. Hauser explained that Dan’s getting IPT was his idea and follow up with a traditional oncologist was recommended, but he did not wish to pursue it. She then dragged him to the oncologist who thought that what he was doing was foolish. After looking at the CT scans he wanted him to get immediate hospitalization with high dose chemotherapy. Fortunately for Dan he repeated the studies. These showed much to his surprise a 90% resolution of the metastatic lesions. Dan and his wife bolted out of that guy’s place and ran back to Caring Medical. In total, Dan received 10 IPT treatments and was discharged. Currently he has no evidence of cancer but will continue to receive follow-up. As a side note he had absolutely no side effects with the IPT treatments. Since Dan’s successful treatment, Sandra (Mrs. Weigand) has become a zealot for natural medicine. She has referred many patients to Caring Medical, some of whom have metastatic cancer. She no longer yells at Dr. Hauser. |
